About Sam LaRussa

Boston-Based Photographer

I'm Sam LaRussa, a photographer with over a decade of experience. I have a background as both an artist and a scientist, and I aim to bring that eye for design and detail to all of my work. I am always down for new subjects or an interesting challenge, so please reach out if you want to book me to photograph you, your product, business or event.

Where You can Find my Work

MY photos go places

I am a supporter of science communication, local journalism and communicating about public infrastructure. I have uploaded some photos relevant to these topics with Creative Commons licenses, and those can be found in this Flickr gallery as well as on Unsplash for anyone's use, free of charge (please contact me for use of any of my photos that do not appear in these two places). While these are not official endorsements, I'm very proud of where these photos have been used.

Where my Free Use PHotos have Ended Up*

My photo of the Hoosac Tunnel in western Massachusetts was used to illustrate an article on the tunnel's construction published by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2024.

My photo of Radithor, a radioactive quack medicine from the early 1900s, was chosen by a Wikipedia user to illustrate the page for this substance. It has since become one of the most common photos of Radithor online. Also a huge thanks to the Museum of Nuclear Science and History for allowing photography!

My photo of Daphne Major, one of the Galapagos Islands, was used as an illustration in The Knowledge Machine: How Irrationality Created Modern Science by NYU philosophy professor Michael Strevens.

My photo of the Fayette Power Project in Texas has been used to illustrate articles on the power industry and climate change. As an avid reader of Popular Science in my childhood, I was very excited to see this photo used on their website!

My photo of A CSX intermodal terminal in Bedford Park, Illinois, has been used to illustrate many articles on the shipping and logistics industries, including this one in TechCrunch.

My photo of the Robert F. Kennedy bridge in the Bronx was used by the Norwood News to illustrate articles on bridge and street closures for several years.
